About Internet Computer (ICP)
About Internet Computer (ICP)
Internet Computer is a Layer 1 blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation that aims to expand the capabilities of the internet by allowing smart contracts to run at web speed and scale directly on-chain. It enables developers to build decentralized applications and services without relying on traditional IT infrastructure.
What Makes Internet Computer Unique?
Unlike typical blockchains that rely on external servers or cloud providers, Internet Computer runs smart contracts called “canisters” entirely on-chain, making it possible to build fully decentralized websites, social networks, and enterprise software. Its unique consensus mechanism, Chain Key Technology, allows for fast finality and seamless scalability.
How Does Internet Computer Work?
The network is powered by independent data centers worldwide, which host nodes that form subnet blockchains. These subnets interoperate to create a unified blockchain network that processes transactions and serves web content. ICP tokens are used for governance, staking, and paying for computational resources.
Who Created Internet Computer?
Internet Computer was created by the DFINITY Foundation, a nonprofit based in Zurich, Switzerland. The project began in 2016 and launched its mainnet in May 2021. It was led by computer scientist Dominic Williams, who aimed to reinvent the internet’s backend.
What Is ICP Used For?
ICP is the native token of the Internet Computer. It’s used to power smart contracts, known as canisters, pay for computation and data storage, and participate in governance via the Network Nervous System (NNS), a DAO that manages the protocol.
How to Store ICP Safely
ICP tokens can be securely stored using wallets that support the Internet Computer ecosystem, including the official Internet Identity system, Plug Wallet, and hardware wallets integrated with the NNS dApp. Secure storage of recovery credentials is essential to maintain access.
